MEET THE ARTIST EVENT

TWO NATIONALLY KNOWN JEWELRY ARTISTS IN SAN ANTONIO:

FREE DEMONSTRATIONS SCHEDULED

Two emerging artists’ in the art jewelry industry will demonstrate their skills for creating unique pieces of jewelry September 29 during the Meet the Artists Series at And the Bead Goes On. The artists, Sandy Forrest-Hartman and Gayle Goddard, will uncover their secrets for turning antique and contemporary dominoes into works of art and using beaded bezel cabochon glass jewels respectively at a FREE event from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. September 29. A workshop with Hartman is also available for a nominal fee which will include the cost of materials. And the Bead Goes On is located in Bracken Village, 18771 Nacogdoches Road, just north of Rolling Oaks Mall.

Forrest-Hartman is the creator of a whole new art form using vintage and contemporary dominoes she embellishes with small prints, glass beads and other processes to create one of a kind earrings and pendants. Goddard is a self-taught bead expert and her creations center around all things glass.

Forrest-Hartman began her work using dominoes and other game pieces several years ago and transforms the age-old game object with tiny prints of everything from sea goddesses to geishas to butterflies enhanced with glass and stone beads into wearable art. Last November, Forrest-Hartman was featured in Home and Garden TV’s “That’s Clever” program and was named artist of the week on Fox TV’s Houston channel in March 2006. She won second place in the Sculpture Category in Richmond, Texas in 2003.

Goddard got her start in all things beads as a hobby and sold her first piece in 1996. She is attracted to abstract, mixed media pieces and says she has never been “a strand-of-pearls and gold hoops kind of girl.” Goddard is best known for using glass beads where she finds inspiration in the colors, blends, and shapes glass allows in her creations. Her work was published in Bead and Button Magazine in 2004 where her Splash bracelet was featured as a project.

Goddard is a member of the Houston Bead Society and conducts workshops around the state. She currently shows pieces at the Fleury Gallery in Houston, and has applied to the Artist-in-Residence program at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.

The Meet the Artist Series event also includes free demonstrations by shop owners Sue Offermann in Viking Knitting and Ellen Hughes in working with Mother Nature in PMC Workshops with other artisans are scheduled including Wendy Price, wire wrapped pendants; Alicia Cisneros-Garza, Christmas flower earrings; Sue Charette-Hood, Wonderdome ring; Nancy Morgan, holiday ornaments; and, Sheri Blackburn, double spiral earrings.
